Keep your fingers close. The Advent Calendar, the new French horror fantasy, is the upcoming Shudder offering for the holidays. With the ultra creepy advent calendar counting down the days to Christmas, our Eva is playing chicken with each little nook she opens. Once she begins, she is locked in! No chocolate is worth this!
The official synopsis reads, “Shudder, AMC Networks’ streamer for horror, thrillers and the supernatural will soon premiere writer/director Patrick Ridremont’s ornate and elegant French horror fantasy The Advent Calendar. Combining Faustian themes and allusions with European folklore and tense, chilling terror, the Shudder Original film provides some highly original holiday season horror.”
“Eva, portrayed by Eug&énie Derouand, &(Paris Police 1900, If You See My Mother), an ex-dancer, is now using a wheelchair, unable to walk. When her friend Sophie, played by Honorine Magnier (Tomorrow is Ours) gives her an old wooden antique advent calendar before Christmas, she realizes each window contains a surprise that triggers repercussions in real life. Some of them are good, but most of them are bad, really bad. Now Eva will have to choose between getting rid of the calendar or walking again – even if it causes death and destruction to everyone she holds dear around her.”
In the last decade, filmmakers have made some truly terrifying films based on the lore of Christmas. They have been ushered into my rotation of holiday film fare to complement the syrupy sweet offerings which I also cherish. We were gifted with writer/director Jalmari Helander’s Rare Exports in 2010. The film takes place in the depths of the Korvatunturi mountains, 486 meters deep. There lies the closest ever guarded secret of Christmas. The time has come to dig it up. The tag line? “This Christmas everyone will believe in Santa Claus.”
In 2015 we had the pleasure of experiencing A Christmas Horror Story. Don’t let William Shatner starring trick you into believing that this film isn’t a true slasher. Interwoven stories that take place on Christmas Eve, as told by one festive radio host: A family brings home more than a Christmas tree, a student documentary becomes a living nightmare, a Christmas spirit terrorizes, Santa slays evil. The tag line? “You better watch out.” Classic.
We even have a new series coming to Netflix the holiday season, deceivingly called Elves. A Christmas vacation turns into a nightmare for a teenager and her family when they discover an ancient menace that stalks their island getaway. The elves in question appear to be cute little guys (Who doesn’t love an elf?!), but we are soon shown these monsters are not the cuddling type. You can look forward to that hitting Netflix November 28.
The Advent Calendar world premiered earlier this year at London’s Frightfest and was produced by Alain Benguigui, Virginie Ogouz, Jean-Yves Roubin, and Cassandre Warnauts. The Advent Calendar premieres exclusively on Shudder on Thursday, December 9th. And check out Shudder for all your holiday horror flicks. They’ve got you covered, from the classics to contemporary Christmas carnage.
